The Sibling Support Program is for children and adolescents (8-17years of age) who have a sister or brother with a disability who reside in the South West Sydney region (Liverpool, Fairfield, Bansktown and Macarthur Areas). The aim of The Sibling Support Program is to help siblings identify and use positive strategies for living with brothers or sisters who have a disability. Often many siblings may experience loneliness, isolation, and low self-esteem. This program will assist siblings and give them opportunity to: · Enhance coping skills · Meet others siblings in similar experiences · Improve their self-esteem · Have fun · Reduce isolation and increase social networks · Share and gather information · Develop a better understanding of their siblings disabilities The Sibling Support Program aims to deliver activities that focus on supporting siblings and the above issues through the following activities: Support & Mentoring Groups will provide guest speakers, share information, workshops to cater needs, chats and debriefs. Drop-In-Centre Activities will act as a safe haven to siblings. It can be a place to complete homework, a hang out zone, access and obtain information and referrals. Individual Counseling will provide an opportunity for siblings to have 1 on 1time in a safe and supportive environment to discuss issues Family Fun Day will be an event planned once a year for all families involved in the program to come together and have a fun day of celebration. Sibling Retreats will be designed to give siblings a chance to relax, getaway, connect with others, and participate in exciting workshops, as well as to be pampered but most of all to have fun. “Brotha’s & Sista’s”Chat Line – once established will enable siblings to talk to one another to give them an opportunity to share their experiences, provide support and reduce isolation in a safe environment.
