How would it be... If you couldn't swat a mosquito
If you couldn't scratch an itch If you couldn't say that you were hungry If you couldn't choose what you wanted to eat If you couldn't pick your clothes If you couldn't say that you needed to go to the toilet If you couldn't tell anybody that you felt sick If you couldn't show them where it hurt If you couldn't tell anybody how you got those bruises If you couldn't wipe away the dribble from your chin If you couldn't turn on the TV If you couldn't tell someone to go away If you couldn't thank someone for a good day If you couldn't go out with your friends If you couldn't read a book If you couldn't do your favourite things because they weren't age appropriate If you couldn't tell somebody that you love them How would it be if the only way you could communicate sad, hurt or bored was to cry, and everyone gets annoyed and ignores you? How would it be? Think about it. This is my sister's world. Please take care of her. Give her love and dignity. Respect her rights. Wipe away the dribble. It could have been you. |

The way that you have conveyed your sister's world to the reader is very clever. It is funny how sometimes it takes putting ourselves into another's reality for us to really comprehend what it would be like, and for us to be compassionate instead of frustrated. Thankyou for sharing your story, I work at a kindergarten and when I get frustrated, I have to remember that the children don't have all the years of experience and living that I've had....it helps me put my frustration in perspective.....your story allowed me to access your sister's experience in a similar way, to reach greater understanding and compassion...cheers and best wishes for your future, louise |

I'm so very proud of you and thank you for all we have shared together. You continue to teach and inspire me. Keep shouting - Young Carers Voices need to be listened to, respected, responded to and celebrated. Meg |
